What is PESCI?

PESCI stands for Pre-Employment Structured Clinical Interview, an assessment defined by AHPRA as a structured evaluation of your knowledge, skills, clinical experience, and attributes. The goal is to determine your suitability for a specific medical position through clinical scenarios and interviews.

Who Needs to Sit for PESCI?

Doctors applying for Limited Registration or Provisional Registration to work in General Practice must undertake a PESCI. This includes those with existing AHPRA registration wishing to transfer to another practice.

Specialist pathway doctors are exempt, as their suitability is assessed by their respective medical colleges.

Additional Requirements for General Practice:

  • Doctors seeking Limited Registration for an Area of Need must have at least three years of full-time equivalent (FTE) experience in General Practice or Primary Care.

When Should You Sit for PESCI?

  • For Limited Registration (Area of Need): Apply for AHPRA registration first to allow them to evaluate your general practice experience.
  • For all other registrations: It’s best to complete your PESCI before submitting your application to AHPRA.

PESCI Providers

Here’s a list of PESCI providers in Australia:

  1. ACRRM:

  2. IME:

  3. RACGP:

    • Currently delivered via Zoom and open to applicants nationwide.

Pro Tip: Book early, as PESCI dates fill quickly. Some providers maintain waitlists, so inquire about availability.

How Does AHPRA Handle PESCI Results?

Once you complete your PESCI, results are shared:

  • With you via the PESCI Outcome Report to Applicant form.
  • Directly with AHPRA through the PESCI Report to the Medical Board of Australia.

Note: If you’ve attempted PESCI more than once, AHPRA will receive copies of all results, including unsuccessful attempts.

Addressing PESCI Panel Recommendations

Any recommendations made by the PESCI panel must be addressed in your application. Use the SPPA-30 Supervision Plan to outline how you’ll meet these recommendations.

AHPRA will review all recommendations alongside previous PESCI results to assess your ability to practice safely.

How Long Are PESCI Results Valid?

PESCI results are valid for 12 months from the date of issuance.

Can You Get a PESCI Exemption?

Exemptions are rare. However, you can apply for a PESCI exemption through AHPRA by submitting a formal request with your original registration application.

Preparing for Your PESCI

Preparation is key. Here are some tips:

  1. There are PESCI Study Buddy Group on Facebook to connect with others preparing for their PESCI.
  2. Avoid relying solely on recalls—these may be inaccurate.
  3. Spend significant time working with your Supervisor at the practice to gain practical insights and support.
